Clan Hamilton
The Clan Hamilton, also known as the House of Hamilton, is a Scottish clan hailing from the Scottish Lowlands. Its roots can be traced back to Walter fitz Gilbert of Hambledon, who is mentioned in a charter to the Monastery of Paisley around 1294. Originally from Renfrewshire, he was awarded lands in Lanarkshire and the Lothians for his support of Robert the Bruce, including Cadzow, which would later become the town of Hamilton in South Lanarkshire.
One of the most notable legends surrounding the clan is its supposed descent from the House of Beaumont, a family that held the manor of Hamilton in Leicestershire. This theory is supported by the fact that the Hamilton coat of arms bears three cinquefoils, which are similar to the single cinquefoil on the Beaumont crest. However, recent evidence suggests that the Umfravilles of Northumberland, who owned a place called Hamilton, also bore a single cinquefoil on their coat of arms. The Hamiltons first confirmed ancestor, Walter FitzGilbert, was a witness to a charter by James, the high steward of Scotland, in 1294-1295. His name appears on the Homage Roll of 1296 as Walter FitzGilbert of Hameldone, but the identity of Gilbert of Hameldone is uncertain.
