Clan Kennedy
Clan Kennedy is a Scottish clan that traces its origins to the Scottish Lowlands. The clan's roots can be traced back to the Votadini, a tribe that inhabited Lothian. Their leader, Cunedda, was dispatched by Vortigern, a British leader, to establish settlements in order to resist Picto-Scottish sea raids in the southwestern region of Scotland. These settlements extended along the west coast, and eventually included the district of Carrick in Scotland, where the clan's name became associated with its origins. The Celtic name for Cunedda, Cinneidgh, means ugly or grim-headed.
During the reign of William the Lion, Gilbert Mac Kenedi was a witness to a charter to Melrose Abbey that granted lands in Carrick. In addition, during the reign of Alexander II of Scotland, Gillespie Kennedy is noted in charters as the senechal of Carrick. These references demonstrate the clan's presence in the region, and provide a glimpse into its early history.
