Clan Gordon: A Legacy of Strength and Loyalty

Clan Gordon is one of Scotland's most powerful and historically significant clans, with deep roots in the Scottish Highlands. The clan's lands once spanned vast territories and are now centered around Aboyne Castle, Aberdeenshire.

Origins and Early History

The first Gordon on record was Richard of Gordon, originally from Swinton, believed to be the grandson of a knight who slew a monstrous animal in the Merse during the reign of King Malcolm III of Scotland. Richard was the Lord of the Barony of Gordon, and he likely passed away around 1200.

Another notable early figure was Bertram de Gordon, known for wounding King Richard of England with an arrow at Châlons.

Clan Gordon's Role in Scottish History

  • Wars of Scottish Independence (13th Century): The Gordons supported William Wallace in Scotland’s fight for independence.
  • 15th Century: The chiefship passed to an heiress, Alicia Gordon, who married her cousin, Adam Gordon. Their male descendants took the Gordon surname and continued leading the clan.
  • Religious Conflicts (15th & 16th Centuries): The Catholic Gordons clashed with Protestant clans, including Clan Forbes. They emerged victorious in the Battle of Glenlivet against the Earl of Argyll.
  • Wars of the Three Kingdoms (17th Century): The clan supported the Royalist cause.
  • Jacobite Uprisings: Clan Gordon backed the Jacobites in 1715, but their chief, the Duke of Gordon, later pledged support to the British-Hanoverian Government during the Jacobite rising of 1745. Despite this, the majority of the clan remained Jacobite.

Gordon Highlanders: Military Legacy

Clan Gordon has two regiments named in its honor:

  1. 81st Regiment of Foot (Aberdeenshire Highland Regiment) – Formed in 1777 by Hon. Colonel William Gordon, son of the Earl of Aberdeen, and disbanded in 1783.
  2. 92nd (Gordon Highlanders) Regiment of Foot – Established in 1794 by Alexander, the 4th Duke of Gordon.

Chief of Clan Gordon

The current chief of Clan Gordon is Granville Charles Gomer Gordon, 13th Marquess of Huntly. He also holds the titles of:

  • Earl of Enzie
  • Earl of Aboyne
  • Lord Gordon of Badenoch
  • Lord Gordon of Strathavon and Glenlivet
  • Baron Meldrum of Morven

He is famously known as "The Cock o' the North".
