Clan Campbell
The Clan Campbell, one of the largest and most influential of the Highland clans, originated from the ancient Britons of Strathclyde according to traditional genealogies. The earliest known Campbell was Gillespie, who was recorded in 1263 and whose family's lands were located in east-central Scotland. A Campbell married the heiress of the O'Duines, bringing the Lordship of Loch Awe and prompting the clan to change its name to Clan O'Duine, later styled as Clann Diarmaid. The clan's power grew rapidly throughout Argyll, with the original seat of the clan located either in Innis Chonnell Castle on Loch Awe or Caisteal na Nigheann Ruaidh on Loch Avich. In the early 14th century, the Campbells became loyal supporters of King Robert the Bruce, fighting alongside him at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. The clan's loyalty to the Bruces and Stewarts was rewarded with extensive lands, taken from enemies of the Bruces in Argyll. Between 1200 and 1500, the clan emerged as one of the most powerful families in Scotland, dominating Argyll and wielding influence and authority from Edinburgh to the Hebrides and western Highlands. The chief of the clan became the Earl of Argyll and later the Duke of Argyll. The clan has several branches, including the Campbells of Breadalbane, Cawdor, Loudoun, and Stratheden.
